An engagement at the Lucerne Festival for a debut concert went to 30-year-old
William Berger (baritone), South Africa.
WILLIAM BERGER
(*1979), baritone, South Africa. William Berger is a graduate and member of the Royal Academy of Music and was a member of the ENO’s Young Singers Program. His performances as an opera singer include the following, among others: the Festival Lyrique d’Aix –en Provence; the Handel & Haydn Society Boston; the Disney Concert Hall L.A.; the Edinburgh International Festival; the London Handel Festival; and the Lucerne Theater. His roles included: Aeneas in Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas”; Conte in Mozart’s “Le nozze di Figaro”; and Alazim in Mozart’s “Zaide.”
William Berger is the award-winner of the Kathleen Ferrier Society Bursary for Young Singers and scholarship-holder of the Countess of Muster Trust and the Ernest Oppenheimer Memorial Trust.
The prize for a concert at the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad went to baritone ThomasTatzl from Austria.
THOMAS TATZEL
(*1979), baritone, Austria. Thomas Tatzel studied with Karlheinz Hanser and Robert Holl at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and graduated with distinction in 2009. He was the finalist and prize-winner, among others, of the Richard Tauber Competition in London; the Concorso di cantanti lirici in Spoleto/Italy and the Hilde Zadek Singing Competition in Vienna, where he was also the scholarship-holder.
Thomas Tatzl’s concert repertoire comprises, together with numerous oratorios, an extensive lieder repertoire, as well as a diverse number of works by Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, Bach and Handel.
Since 2009/10 he has been a member of the International Opera Studio of the Oper Zürich, where he performed as Papageno in Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte”; as the old servant in Strauss’ “Elektra”; and as the policeman in Schreker’s “Der ferne Klang.”
An engagement for a role at the Musik - Theater Bern went to Eve-Maud Hubeaux, the young mezzo-soprano from Geneva, Switzerland.
EVE-MAUD HUBEAUX, mezzo-soprano
Mezzo-soprano Eve-Maud Hubeaux was born in Geneva in 1988. She began her studies in music with a concert diploma as a pianist. Parallel to this, she began her vocal training in 2001 with Hiroko Kawamichi at the Conservatoire de Lausanne, where she graduated with distinction in 2007. She is the winner of the “Prix Jacquart” and the “Prix De Crouzaz” and the SMJW. Thereafter she attended maser classes with Peter Galliard, Julian Gavin and Laura Sarti. Her concert repertoire comprises works by Mendelssohn, Mozart, Schubert and Vivaldi.
She was the winner of the Schlossoper Haldenstein Audition Competition in 2009. Her roles until now include, among others: Ines in Verdi’s “Il Trovatore”; Aladdin’s mother in Nino Rota’s “Aladin et la lampe magique”; and Driade in Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos.”
Since autumn 2009 a member of the Opera Studio of the Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg. The following roles were planned: Fidelma in Cimarosa’s “Il Matrimonio Segreto”; Marcellina in Mozart’s “Le nozze di Figaro.”
Apart from her singing career, Eve-Maud Hubeaux established her second mainstay as a lawyer. In 2009 she obtained her Masters in Jurisprudence from the Université de Savoie-Chambéry, after having already earned her Bachelor Degree in Swiss Law and her Masters in French Civil Law from the University of Lausanne.
